42nd Annual Conference of the Association for Canadian Studies in German-Speaking Countries (GKS)
The Association for Canadian Studies in German-Speaking Countries is a multidisciplinary academic association which aims to increase and disseminate a scholarly understanding of Canada. The 42nd annual conference will focus on the themes of “Ecologies – Environments – Ethics” with an emphasis on Canadian and comparative ecological and environmental topics and narratives. It aims at studying the relationships between physical environments, questions of ecologies and environmental ethics as well as social, cultural, political, and economic concerns raised by environmental crises in public, scientific, academic, educational, literary, and media discourses.
Rising sea levels, a warming Arctic, more frequent and devastating hurricanes, droughts, and bush fires – multiple environmental crises facing the earth are becoming ever more inescapable at both transnational and local levels. Given that climate change is influenced and produced by complex and globally entangled conditions, the role not only of economics and STEM fields of knowledge but also of the humanities is thus increasingly recognized as crucial for the critical exploration of possible solutions. Representations of nature’s agency and relationships between humans, animals, plants, and earth have become significant to many studies, from Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives. The work of climatologists and other natural scientists is thus supported by work of eminent Canadian personalities as environmentalist David Suzuki or journalist Naomi Klein, by Indigenous philosophers such as Richard Atleo (Umeek) and Jeannette Armstrong, environmental humanists such as Robert Boschman, Mario Trono, and Byron Williston, or filmmakers such as Zacharias Kunuk and Ian Mauro. Bruno Latour argues that all problems that await society are linked to climate change, claiming that mainstream environmental movements are doomed to fail as long as they envision political ecology as tied to the protection and management of nature through political methodologies and policies. Theoretical approaches and social movements from Fridays for Future to Indigenous protests against environmental damage and economic exploitation highlight the centrality of considering ecological questions in a broad and interrelated context of politics, economics, and knowledge production about the environment as well as questions of social justice, philosophy, and ethics – within and beyond a Canadian context.
For its 2021 conference, the Association is thus interested in theoretical, empirical, or analytical contributions from any discipline in the following areas:
- Environment and Climate Change: Policies and Technologies for Sustainability and Concepts of Conservation;
- The Role of the Humanities, Social and Political Sciences, and Economics in the Environmental Crisis: Communications, Narratives, Visions;
- Indigenous Environmental Ethics, Experiences and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK): Resource Management, Resilience, Sovereign Rights;
- Rethinking Nature, Culture, and Environment: Critical Discourses on Ecologies and Environmental Ethics and Environmental Activism.

Paper proposals/abstracts of max. 500 words can be submitted in French or English and should outline:
- methodology and theoretical approaches chosen
- content/body of research
- which of the four main aspects outlined above the paper speaks to (if any).
In addition, some short biographical information (max. 250 words) should be provided, specifying current institutional affiliation and position as well as research background with regard to the conference topic and/or four main aspects.
Abstracts should be submitted no later than June 15, 2020 to the GKS administration: gks@kanada-studien.de.

Le 42ième congrès annuel de l’Association d’études canadiennes dans les pays de langues allemandes (GKS)
L’Association d’études canadiennes dans les pays de langues allemandes est une association académique multidisciplinaire qui vise à intensifier et à diffuser une compréhension académique du Canada. Le 42ème congrès annuel portera sur les thèmes « Écologies – Environnements – Éthiques » et se concentrera notamment sur des sujets et des récits écologiques et environnementaux dans une perspective soit canadienne soit comparée. Ce congrès a pour objectif d’étudier les relations entre les environnements physiques, les questions des écologies et des éthiques environnementales ainsi que de discuter des enjeux sociaux, culturels, politiques et économiques soulevés par les crises environnementales dans les discours publics, scientifiques, académiques, éducationnels, littéraires et médiatiques.
La montée du niveau des eaux des mers, le réchauffement de l’Arctique, les ouragans plus fréquents et plus dévastateurs, la sécheresse et les feux de brousse – les multiples crises environnementales auxquelles la terre est actuellement confrontée deviennent toujours plus inévitables, tant au niveau transnational que local. Étant donné que le changement climatique est influencé et généré par des conditions complexes et globalement empêtrées, le rôle de l’économie et des domaines de connaissance des STIM ainsi que celui des sciences humaines est donc de plus en plus reconnu comme essentiel dans l’exploration critique des solutions possibles. La façon dont se représente la capacité d’agir de la nature (nature’s agency) ainsi que les relations entre les humains, les animaux, les plantes et la terre est devenue importante pour de nombreuses études que ce soit du point de vue autochtone ou non autochtone. Le travail des climatologues et d’autres scientifiques bénéficie ainsi de l’appui du travail de grandes personnalités canadiennes comme l’écologiste David Suzuki ou la journaliste Naomi Klein, de philosophes autochtones comme Richard Atleo (Umeek) et Jeannette Armstrong, d’humanistes environnementaux comme Robert Boschman, Mario Trono et Byron Williston, ou encore de cinéastes comme Zacharias Kunuk et Ian Mauro. Bruno Latour argumente que tous les problèmes auxquels fera face la société sont reliés au changement climatique. Il affirme que les mouvements environnementaux conventionnels et dominants sont voués à l’échec tant qu’ils associent l’écologie politique à la protection et la gestion de la nature à l’aide de méthodologies et stratégies politiques. Les divers approches théorétiques et mouvements sociaux allant des manifestations Fridays for Future à celles des autochtones contre les dommages environnementaux et l’exploitation économique, soulignent tous la place centrale des réflexions sur des questions écologiques dans un contexte général et interdépendant de politique, d’économie et de la production des savoirs sur l’environnement, ainsi que des questions de justice sociale, de philosophie et d’éthique – au sein du Canada et au-delà.
Dans le contexte du congrès de 2021, nous nous intéressons donc aux contributions théorétiques, empiriques ou analytiques relevant de l’une des thématiques suivantes:
- Le changement environnemental et climatique : les politiques et technologies durables et les concepts de conservation;
- Le rôle des sciences humaines, sociales, politiques et économiques dans la crise environnementale : la communication et les récits des crises, les visions écologiques alternatives;
- Les éthiques et les expériences écologiques et les savoirs écologiques traditionnels (TEK) d’une perspective autochtone : les systèmes de gestion de ressources naturelles, la résilience et les droits souverains;
- La réévaluation de la nature, de la culture et de l’environnement : les discours critiques sur les écologies, les éthiques écologique et l’activisme écologique.
Contact et soumission des résumés :
Les propositions d’article/ résumés de 500 mots maximum peuvent être soumis soit en français soit en anglais et doivent souligner:
- la méthodologie et les approches théoriques choisies
- le contenu/ le corpus de recherche
- l’aspect (choisi parmi les quatre mentionnés plus haut) traité par le résumé.
Également doivent être fournies quelques brèves informations biographiques (250 mots maximum), spécifiant votre actuelle affiliation institutionnelle, votre position actuelle, ainsi que votre expérience de recherche en rapport avec le sujet du congrès et/ou des quatre aspects principaux.
