50 Years of Canadian Studies at Trier University

20. bis 22 Mai, Universität Trier

Established in 1976 and permanently institutionalised in the form of the Centre for Canadian Studies (ZKS) in 1996, Canadian Studies have a long-standing tradition at Trier University. The celebrations of fifty years of Canadian Studies in 2026 will begin with a festive opening event on May 20, during which Prof. David Staines (Ottawa) will receive an honorary doctorate for his outstanding contributions to Canadian Studies and his support of Trier’s centre. From May 21-22, ZKS is proud to host their partners from the University of Manitoba and beyond for their biannual partnership conference. Entitled “Canada, eh? Fifty Years of Canadian Studies at Trier University. German and Canadian Perspectives,” this conference aims to both provide an overview of Canadian Studies today and to discuss current Canadian perspectives on the world. With panels and roundtable discussions dedicated to Indigenous studies, politics, literature and the arts in English and French, and to teaching Canada, the conference offers manifold perspectives on pasts, presents, and potential futures. ZKS is honored to receive acclaimed writer Madeleine Thien for a public reading on Friday, May 22, in Trier’s city library.
