Call for Papers: The Eleventh International Tartu Conference on Canadian Studies „WATER“

Department of English Studies and Centre for Canadian Studies, University of Tartu, Estonia

Estonian Association for Canadian Studies with the assistance of Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Tartu, and Embassy of Canada

11–12 October 2025, at the University of Taru, Estonia

Water is a central notion that unites the diverse ways of looking at Canada to deal with its cultural, social, environmental, historical, political, geographic, and economic issues.

With this conference, we seek to explore water from multiple inter/disciplinary and theoretical perspectives of the humanities, as well as natural and social sciences.

While addressing the conference theme, the contexts of the issues in the papers may be current or historical or combine both. We welcome case studies and theoretical papers as well as comparative analyses of Canada and other countries.

The topics of the contributions may include but are not limited to:

  • images and symbols of water (in literature and other art forms)
  • water in mythology and religion
  • water and place names; water and identity
  • water forms; water and life forms
  • water bodies; water and landscapes
  • waterways; water, exploration, and colonialism
  • water and migration (of people, cultures, traditions), diaspora and multiculturalism
  • water re/sources and environment
  • water and geo/politics
  • Aboriginal Studies, Quebec Studies and Canadian Studies
  • Canada and the Baltics, Baltic diasporas in Canada
  • concepts, theories, and research methodologies to deal with the topics.

The working language of the conference is English; however, presentations can be made either in English or French. The length of the presentations is 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for discussion.
