The first and currently only graduate journal for American Studies in Europe Emerging Voices in American Studies (aspeers) invites article proposals for ist 2019 issue. The general section of the 12 (2019) issue aims to showcase outstanding academic work done on the MA level of American studies at European universities. The topical section will feature academic submissions organized around the theme of „American Anger.“

Heidelberg Center for American Studies, March 18-22, 2019
The Heidelberg Center for American Studies (HCA) invites applications for its annual one-week Spring Academy conference, which provides twenty international Ph.D. students with the opportunity to present and discuss their Ph.D. projects. UdS American Studies Graduate Forum, Saarland University, Saarbrücken, 7 – 8 December 2018m Venue: Campus Buildings C 7 4 on Friday and C 9 3 on Saturday

In cooperation with the German-American Institute Saarland, the Chair of North American Literary and Cultural Studies at Saarland University (UdS) will hold a 2-day American Studies Graduate Forum that invites advanced Master students, doctoral students, as well as advanced scholars to present their current projects-in-progress in a workshop-style setting. The forum will offer participants a chance to discuss their research with peers as well as with experienced scholars. This year, we invite submissions dealing with aesthetic border practices.

This year’s UdS American Studies Graduate Forum will be organized together with our DAAD Eastpartnership group “The Bio-Politics of Borders in Times of Crisis,” bringing experts in the field of Cultural Border Studies from Petro-Mohyla-Black Sea National U, Mykolaiv (Ukraine) to Saarbrücken.

In the context of the continually evolving field of Border Studies, the UdS American Studies Graduate Forum 2018 offers a setting in which a decidedly humanities-driven, cultural approach to borders will be discussed. Focusing on aesthetic practices, this workshop seeks to investigate various cultural borderlands in North America and Europe. In particular, it aims at carving out a politics of borderlands aesthetics. Following Jacques Rancière, politics is aesthetics when it constitutes a challenge to dominant social perception. Aesthetics, in turn, is also political. It is precisely this dynamic relation that aesthetic practices engage in which will be of interest for us in our explorations of cultural borderlands.

Congrès des sciences humaines 2019, réunion annuelle de la Société historique du Canada, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Colombie-Britannique, du 3 au 5 juin 2019

En 2019, l’University of British Columbia accueillera la Réunion annuelle de la Société historique du Canada à Vancouver. Le Comité du programme a choisi pour thème « Conversations à travers le temps, l’espace et les cultures » pour encourager la participation de chercheuses et de chercheurs travaillant sur différents sujets, thèmes, périodes et lieux géographiques et ayant recours à différentes approches méthodologiques à penser de manière critique à l’importance des « conversations » dans la création et la dissémination du savoir historique. Les historiennes et les historiens conversent avec les sources, les archives, leurs collègues et le grand public. Ce faisant, ils produisent le savoir historique lui-même et ils contribuent à mettre en lumière la nature de ce savoir et les dynamiques de pouvoir qui le façonnent et le sous-tendent. Ces conversations réifient, renforcent, questionnent, contestent ou transcendent les frontières géographiques, politiques, sociales, culturelles, sexuelles ou autres. Elles contribuent également aux débats publics en rejoignant un large auditoire qui va bien au-delà du monde académique. Ces conversations sont néanmoins limitées par les moyens de communication utilisés par les chercheuses et les chercheurs, par leurs intérêts de recherche ainsi que par les défis posés par la traduction. Le Comité du programme invite ainsi les historiennes et les historiens à concevoir la Réunion annuelle 2019 comme une opportunité de réfléchir à toutes ces formes de conversation qui contribuent à la production du savoir historique, savoir qui n’est pas le fruit d’un travail solitaire, mais plutôt celui d’un dialogue que les chercheuses et les chercheurs entretiennent avec leurs sources, leurs collègues et leurs publics. Cette réflexion permettra de repenser les sujets abordés, les modes de communication privilégiés et les publics visés par les travaux historiques.
