Call for Contributors to Blog RCMP at 150

The North-West Mounted Police were established by the relatively new Dominion of Canada in May 1873. Initially an attempt to make sense of the massive, varied, and challenging geography of the Dominion, which had expanded dramatically after the purchase of Rupert’s Land from the Hudson’s Bay Company a few years prior, the North-West Mounted Police have environmental themes baked into their roots. Its was amalgamated with the Dominion Police, the Dominion’s federal law enforcement agency, in 1920 to form the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Not only have the Mounties, as they came to be called around the turn of the 20th century, been a relative through-line in Canadian history, but they have also been mobilized as a symbol of what it means to be Canadian. They have appeared in Hollywood films, cartoons, and in commemorative, parodic, and patriotic consumer culture of all sorts. Subsequently, the RCMP is a part of both “real” and “imagined” Canadian environments, shaping how Canada looks and feels at home and elsewhere.

CFP Canadian cultures: beyond the past, into the future

Canada is commonly thought of as a bilingual country, whose bilingualism has given rise to an anglophone and a francophone culture. However, Canada’s cultural landscape is much more complex, being multiethnic and multicultural. Such a complexity requires further investigation.

The International Conference of the Italian Association for Canadian Studies aims at providing a forum for sharing some critical thinking in order to delve into the cultural, linguistic, artistic, ideological, political, economic implications of such a plurality, as well as its consequences on the construction of identities.

Canada’s history is rooted in the co-existence of different cultures and people gradually occupying the northern part of the American continent: starting with the Indigenous peoples, who have lived therein since time immemorial, then the francophone and anglophone communities colonizing the country after the XIV century, and the latest, contemporary immigration flows. While such a diversified stratification represents one of the treasures of nowadays Canada, nonetheless it has often led to internal struggles and misunderstandings. As a consequence, the so-called Canadian identity is either seen as homogeneous and cohesive or as the result of a plurality of specific cultural entities.

CFP Colloque en Études Canadiennes / Canadian Studies Colloquium (Zoom)

Organized by the Emerging Scholars Forum of the Association for Canadian Studies in German-Speaking Countries (GKS)

The Canadian Studies Colloquium offers an online platform for emerging scholars to share and discuss their ongoing research projects with peers and experts in the field. We welcome proposals from scholars at the BA to Postdoc level who are working on research projects with a strong focus on Canadian Studies. Whether you would like to address theory, methodology or content of your ongoing research, all research aspects and angles are welcome. Your submission can be work in progress on a final BA or MA thesis, an early draft of a PhD project proposal, an excerpt from a (planned) dissertation chapter, or any other research project you are currently working on. Disciplines can include, but are not limited to, Language, Literature and Culture in Anglophone and Francophone Canada, Women*, Gender and Queer Studies, Geography and Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology, and Indigenous and Cultural Studies. We also encourage transdisciplinary and comparative perspectives that work on the Americas with a clear connection to Canada.

To facilitate dialogue and exchange, participants are invited to circulate a project draft in advance (1-2 pages for BA and MA projects, max. 5 pages for PhD and Postdoc projects) outlining the main ideas of their project. During the online colloquium, presenters will have the chance to frame their projects and raise questions in a brief presentation, followed by an in-depth discussion. This extensive exchange will hopefully allow participants to gain insightful new perspectives regarding their own projects.

The Canadian Studies Colloquium will take place online and welcomes international scholars.

If you are a BA or MA scholar interested in participating, please submit your project draft in English, French or German to alisa.preusser[at]uni-potsdam.de and florian.wagner[at]uni-jena.de by October 15, 2023.

Your submission should include:

  • Title of your project
  • Project draft (1-2 pages), which might include a brief summary of the research topic, question and thesis statement; and/or an outline of the planned structure, and/or a brief overview of the methods used; etc.
  • A short biographical note (max. 200 words), including the applicant’s name; preferred pronouns, if you wish; email address; and university affiliation

There is no need to hand in an abstract in advance.

If you are a PhD or Postdoc scholar interested in participating, please submit an abstract in English, French or German to alisa.preusser[at]uni-potsdam.de and florian.wagner[at]uni-jena.de by July 15, 2023.

Your submission should include:

  • Title of your project
  • Abstract (max. 300 words)
  • A short biographical note (max. 200 words), including the applicant’s name; preferred pronouns, if you wish; email address; and institutional affiliation, if applicable

Upon acceptance, the project outlines of max. 5 pages will be due by October 15, 2023.

Les Journées Doctorants et Jeunes Chercheurs 2023 aborderont les questions de transferts, de représentations et de mémoires, dans un contexte de révolutions aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, dans l’espace atlantique nord. La Grande-Bretagne, la France et leurs colonies atlantiques dans les espaces nord-américains et caribéens furent ébranlées par des révoltes, des rébellions et des épisodes révolutionnaires. Ces bouleversements ont engendré des représentations multiples, dans les champs sociaux, politiques, religieux et artistiques. La révolution est protéiforme. Son sens évolue selon les acteurs et les époques, de la révolution copernicienne à l’idée radicale de la tabula rasa. Nous nous intéressons au temps long de la révolution, aux réactions en chaîne qui secouent les sociétés atlantiques de l’époque moderne en donnant un sens nouveau au mot de liberté. Les révolutions de la fin du XVIIIe siècle trouvent-elles leur origine dans les révoltes parlementaires des années 1640 ? Dans la dissidence religieuse ? Quel rôle les Lumières jouent-elles dans cette transition ? Nous encourageons les communicant.e.s à aborder les questions sémantiques, en travaillant les distinctions entre révolte, rébellion, événement révolutionnaire et révolution ainsi que leurs intéractions.

New Perspectives on Multidisciplinary Québec: Studies from Europe and Around the World

In a recent issue, Zeitschrift für Kanada-Studien, the journal of the Association for Canadian Studies in German-speaking Countries (Gesellschaft für Kanada-Studien– GKS), devoted a section to the future of Canadian Studies, both English and French. This issue raises many challenges regarding the teaching of Québec studies and the training of a new generation of scholars (Mathis-Moser 2022, 142), but also about current research. Hauser, in particular, observes a new interest in migrant, women’s, and Indigenous writing, showing that the fossilization of certain subjects or concepts is fading (2022, 128).

The CRILCQ (Centre de recherche interuniversitaire sur la littérature et la culture québécoises) has previously worked in 2021 on the creation of a collection of new research perspectives entitled „Nouvelles études québécoises.“ The latter provides an overview of recently published works in literary, cultural and linguistic studies, but with an endogenous character that ignores or omits the international perspective. A focus on new and future directions of Québec studies abroad is still to be undertaken.

Where does research in Québec Studies come from and where is it headed? What are its new epistemological modalities? In which trends is the next generation of scholars in the field interested? Do these suggest a hard shift in focus or a multiplication of interests?

In this proposed special dossier for Québec Studies 77 (Spring/Summer 2024), guest editors Jody Danard (University of Bremen) and Manuel Sousa Oliveira (University of Porto / CETAPS) mean to try to answer some of these questions and thus contribute to the revitalization of Québec studies outside of Québec by foregrounding the ongoing and innovative research on Québec being conducted by ECRs (Early Career Researchers) from Europe and around the world. Studying Québec abroad often comes with practical challenges that inevitably shape one’s research. That Québec studies, e.g., in European universities can often only be found as a marginal research interest within French or English(-Canadian) departments and research centers (Mathis-Moser 2022, 142), suggests that this lack of resources and institutional support affects the vitality and viability of the field.

Thus, this proposed special issue aims at showcasing outstanding new research on the broad field that is Québec studies, being conducted by ECRs from outside Québec – in full cognizance of the added challenges that may come with the place and context of research. The guest editors particularly welcome article proposals from MA students, PhD students and candidates, and recent PhDs/early postdoctoral researchers on the innovative research work happening today in Europe and elsewhere. The dossier is intended to be multidisciplinary, which is why articles in political and social sciences, history, literature, culture, linguistics, geography, didactics, law or even economics can be proposed. Furthermore, the editors welcome interpretive or theoretical essays, book reviews, and interviews in all disciplines pertaining to the study of Québec. Interdisciplinary approaches are particularly encouraged.

Specific topics on Québec studies may include (but are not limited to):

  • Children’s and YA literature, comics and graphic novels
  • Novels, short fiction, drama, poetry, and other literary forms
  • Film, TV, and other media – including inter-/transmedial approaches
  • SFF, horror, apocalyptic, and utopian literatures
  • Imagological readings of foreignness in Québec literature (and vice versa)
  • Transnational and migrant literatures
  • Comparative readings of Québec and other (francophone) national literatures
  • The Digital Humanities and the study of Québec
  • Francophone Indigenous literatures
  • Race and ethnicity in literary representations and the literary market
  • Gender and sexuality (incl. feminist and queer approaches)
  • Ecocriticism, ecofeminism, critical animal studies, climate fiction, and/or representations of the environment (incl. e.g. eco-anxiety)
  • Ethics and affects in culture and society
  • New perspectives in sociolinguistics and discourse analysis
  • Québec’s (normative policy) on the French language
  • School textbooks analysis, Teaching Québec studies abroad (e.g. pedagogical approaches)
  • Rereading of history, social changes and milestones of Québec (e.g., Expo 67)

The proposal should be sent as a single Word file, and include “QS77 Submission” or “QS77 Soumission” in the subject line. If accepted, authors must submit full manuscripts (7000-7500 words) to the guest editors by July 1, 2023 for a first round of revisions before being submitted for blind peer review to Québec Studies. Please note that positive feedback by the guest editors to abstracts and/or full manuscripts does not guarantee that the proposal will be accepted for publication. Final approval will be given by the journal editors after submission in the Fall of 2023.

Québec Studies is the journal of the American Council for Québec Studies (ACQS) published by the Liverpool University Press. It is a high-impact journal indexed and abstracted in Scopus.
