Organisiert vom Zentrum für Kanadastudien in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Zentrum für Interreligiöse Studien

Veranstaltung im Rahmen der Vortragsreihe der fünf Länderzentren der Universität Innsbruck: Staat · Religion · Gesellschaft.

Bis heute wird in manchen Ländern die strikte Trennung von Staat und Kirche als wichtiges demokratisches Prinzip angesehen; prominente Beispiele hierfür sind Frankreich (fr. laïcité) und Italien (it. laicità). De facto gewinnen religiöse Gemeinschaften aber immer mehr Macht in Gesellschaft und Politik, sowohl in den USA als auch in Lateinamerika (Evangelikale Kirchen). Auch in Russland hat sich eine neue, konservative Orthodoxie formiert und ringt um Einfluss, und in Kanada versteht sich der Bouchard-Taylor Report on Cultural and Religious Accommodation als zeitgemäße Antwort auf eine Situation, in der die Beziehungen zwischen Staat und Kirche nach kultureller und religiöser Harmonisierung verlangen. Wie erklären sich all diese Phänomene, wie werden sie gelebt, was könnte uns in der Zukunft erwarten?

Présentation

Au cours des dix-sept années d’existence du CRILCQ, les études québécoises ont été dynamisées par une série de repositionnements et de redéfinitions, simultanées ou suc­ces­sives, tant sur les plans scientifique qu’identitaire. En effet, alors que les pre­miers centres de recherche en études littéraires au Québec (le CRELIQ et le CETUQ no­tam­ment) avaient poursuivi les grands projets de consti­tution des corpus, de valo­ri­sa­tion et de patrimonialisation de la littérature québécoise, le CRILCQ s’est défini d’entrée de jeu par sa position attentive aux processus culturels, aux tressages mul­tiples, à toutes les modalités qui font de la culture québécoise un système com­plexe d’interactions, en constante évolution. Nourris par un vaste éven­tail de théories sur la culture contem­poraine, de la littérature comparée à la sémiotique en passant par les études féministes, l’histoire culturelle à la française, les cultural studies britanniques et la new cultural history américaine, les travaux menés par les chercheurs et les équipes du CRILCQ abordent la culture québécoise sous toutes ses fa­cettes, dans ses an­crages locaux aussi bien que dans son internationalisation.

This talk will recount the remarkable story of Canadian poet Frank Prewett during and after the First World War. Prewett’s brooding good looks and claims to Iroquois ancestry attracted both sexes, including British aristocrats Siegfried Sassoon and Lady Ottoline Morrell. Amidst the heady vertigo of pandemic-ridden, post-war England, this remarkable Canadian became the toast of elite British literary society—that is, until it all crashed around his ears.

JOY PORTER is Leverhulme Major Research Fellow and PI of the Treatied Spaces Research Group at the University of Hull, U.K. (treatiedspaces.com) where she researches Indigenous, environmental, and diplomatic themes in an interdisciplinary context. Fascinated by the mind, by what makes us love, persevere, transcend and escape the legacies of conflict, her work exposes how culture impacts the world.
